VPN (Mac): Installation and Connection

This document provides instructions for connecting to UW-Stout's VPN service on an Apple computer running macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or newer.


All Stout-issued Apple laptops come with a pre-installed VPN. If your Mac does not have the VPN, please contact the Help Desk.


To connect to VPN from your Apple computer: 

  1. Click on System Preferences

  2. Click on Network

  3. Click on UW-Stout VPN

  4. Click the Connect button. (If the button is grayed out, you may need to click the Lock icon in the lower left, and then enter your UW-Stout username and password to unlock the VPN panel and allow the Connect button to be clicked.  You can prevent having to do this in the future by showing the connection in the menu bar (see instructions below.)

  5. Enter your UW-Stout username and password when prompted.


To show the connection in the menu bar (recommended)

  1. Click on System Preferences

  2. Click on Network

  3. Click on UW-Stout VPN

  4. Click the checkbox for Show VPN status in menu bar.

  5. Close the System Preferences Window.

  6. Click on the new icon in the status bar and choose Connect UW-Stout VPN

  7. Enter your UW-Stout username and password when prompted.
