What is Microsoft 365 for Education?
Microsoft 365 for Education is an Microsoft plan that is available to active or part-time UW-Stout students. Schools such as Stout qualify for this benefit when they have licensed Microsoft institution-wide for their faculty and staff through Microsoft’s Volume Licensing program and are enrolled to allow students to sign-up directly with Microsoft.
Microsoft 365 is accessed using an active student's UW-Stout email address and password. This plan allows students to use online versions of or install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher, and Access on up to 5 PCs or Macs and Office apps on other mobile devices including Android, iPad®, and Windows tablets.
Please note that Microsoft 365 is a robust and dynamic service; UW-Stout technology staff are not experts in all aspects of Microsoft 365 nor its components. Users are encouraged to explore the features of Microsoft 365, utilize Microsoft’s online training materials via their Learning Center, and explore other sites, such as LinkedIn Learning, for training and how-to's.
How long can I use Microsoft 365 for Education?
All active students, faculty and staff have access to UW-Stout's Microsoft 365 for Education license. After graduation, new alumni will have access to their UW-Stout account for 13 months. This includes their email account and all Microsoft applications.
Can I share the Microsoft 365 plan with others?
Microsoft 365 for Education s licensed for use only by the eligible active student, faculty, or staff member.
How do I install Microsoft 365 desktop applications
Active full or part-time UW-Stout students, faculty and staff qualify for use and installation of Microsoft 365 products on up to five devices at no cost.
Install Using Outlook
- Log in to your Stout email from my apps, myapps.uwstout.edu. This will log you into Outlook's Web App.
- In the top left, click the grid icon and then Microsoft 365.
- In the upper right, select Install apps. You will have two options. Most users can just click Microsoft 365 apps to start the download.
- Save the OfficeSetup download file.
- A pop up will appear showing the steps to finish the download. You will need to browse to the saved file and open file to install Microsoft 365.
- If you do choose Other install options, you will have see other options and settings.
Having trouble installing? Microsoft maintains a troubleshooting site. NOTE: Account and product key issues addressed by this site are NOT applicable for UW-Stout's Microsoft 365 accounts; no key is required.
Already have Microsoft 365 Home? Microsoft recommends uninstalling the home version prior to installing Microsoft 365 for Business.
Eligibility is limited to active students, faculty, and staff. Alumni and retirees are not eligible for installation of Microsoft 365.
Support for the installation of Microsoft 365 by the Technology Help Desk is limited to consultation. Computers must meet Microsoft's 365 system requirements and have internet access. Problems with installation may arise due to malware or hardware issues. The Technology Help Desk can only provide general guidance for resolving these issues and cannot service personally-owned computers.
How do I install Microsoft 365 applications on a mobile device?
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Drive, Teams and OneNote can be installed on a mobile device. Outlook can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play Store.
Other Office mobile apps available are Lens, Planner, and SharePoint.

Please Note: All mobile devices are required to have a password/passcode lock in order to access Stout email accounts per the Information Technology Acceptable User Policy (Policy No. 09-66).
How is OneDrive for Education different from OneDrive?
- OneDrive is free online personal storage that you get with either a Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Live, Hotmail, etc.). Use OneDrive to save documents, photos, and other files in the cloud, share them with friends, and even collaborate on content.
- OneDrive for Education (also known as OneDrive for Business) is online storage intended for educational purposes. Your OneDrive for Education (Microsoft 365) is managed by your organization and lets you share and collaborate on work documents with colleagues. Site collection administrators in your organization control what you can do in the library. Graduates will retain their OneDrive for Education account (including OneDrive and Outlook) for 13 months after graduation. After that time, Microsoft 365 access will expire. Your account associated with UW-Stout should be used for school-appropriate content, such as business and schoolwork. Permissions and access can be changed by UW-Stout at any time.
