In October 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. This means that there will be no more updates, security patches, or technical assistance for the operating system.  To ensure your device remains secure and up-to-date, your computer will need to be upgraded to Windows 11. 

Preparing for the Upgrade 

Before you begin the upgrade process, there are a few important steps you should take to ensure everything goes smoothly: 

• Backup Your Data: It is always a good idea to make sure your important files and data is backed up to OneDrive before performing an operating system upgrade. This will prevent any potential data loss during the process. 

• Plug In Your Device: Ensure your device is connected to a power source throughout the upgrade process to prevent any interruptions due to battery drain. 

• Be Patient: The upgrade process can take some time, so make sure you have enough time set aside. Do not attempt to use your device while it is upgrading. 

• Prepare for Restarts: The upgrade process will require your device to restart a couple of times. Be prepared for these restarts and avoid interrupting them. 

• Not on Campus: If you are updating your computer off campus, you will need to be connected to VPN.

Note: If you have a device that is unable to run Windows 11, the update will not run. You will need to replace this device with a newer device before October 2025. 

Steps to Upgrade Using Software Center 

Follow these steps to upgrade your machine from Windows 10 to Windows 11 using the install file in Software Center:

1. Open Software Center: Open the Software Center on your Windows 10 device. You can find this by searching for Software Center in the Start menu. 
2. Locate the Windows 11 Install File: Click on the Operating Systems option on the left hand side. It will be named Windows 11 Upgrade.
3. Initiate the Installation: Click on the Windows 11 install file and select Install to begin the upgrade process. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the Software Center.
4. Follow Installation Prompts: The installation process will prompt you to accept the license agreement and confirm your choices. Make sure to read through the prompts carefully and follow the instructions.
5. Wait for the Upgrade to Complete: The upgrade process will take some time, during which your device will restart several times. Be patient and do not turn off your device or interrupt the process.
6. Check for Updates: After the upgrade, check for any additional updates that may be available for Windows 11. This ensures you have the latest features and security patches.
