Adobe Apps Won’t Launch: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Errors (0xc0000142, MSVCP140.dll)

This document covers the diagnosis of a faulty C++ redistributable runtime that can prevent the use of certain Adobe apps, and how to fix it.

When trying to boot an Adobe app or AutoCAD, if you receive an error message such as:

  • "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."
  • "The code execution cannot proceed because <fromyourerror>.dll(ex: MSVCP140.dll) was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem. "

This is usually caused by a faulty C++ redistributable runtime. Follow the steps below to repair your installation and fix the applications:

  1. Navigate to Microsoft's C++ Redistributable Download Page and click on the version below (latest).

    C++ Redist Download Page
  2. From there, download the x64 release and run the file once it finishes.
  3. Once ran, an installation window will open prompting you to proceed with the install steps as prompted.

    C++ Install
  4. When installation finishes, your device requires a restart for the runtime to update.
  5. Upon restarting, the applications affected should be working again.

If this does not fix your error, please navigate to Adobe Community, find your product and search your specific error message.
