Kaltura will soon include machine-generated, automated captions.
Beginning December 1, 2021, the UW System Kaltura media management service will include machine-generated, automated captions (auto captions) by default at no charge to the user or campus. On this date and thereafter, videos created in or uploaded to Kaltura will have machine captions automatically ordered and applied to the video, replacing the current manual process of ordering captions. Videos created in or uploaded to Kaltura prior to December 1, 2021 are not impacted by this change.
Kaltura auto captions are meant for general use and are, on average, approximately 90 percent accurate. Auto caption accuracy varies depending upon the audio quality, clarity of speech, background noise, etc. While video authors are encouraged to edit their video captions to correct errors for accuracy, there is no expectation that correcting auto captions for general use is required.
Auto captioning does not meet the standard for providing a reasonable accommodation. If captions are needed to fulfill a reasonable accommodation for disability-related access, please contact Disability Services for more information about meeting our campus accessibility requirements : https://www.uwstout.edu/life-stout/student-services/disability-services
