Connect Gaming Device, SmartTV, Media Player to the Wireless Network
Instructions to connect a WiFi device to StoutNonSecure (primarily in the Residence Halls)
StoutNonSecure is the wireless network for devices not compatible with the secure enterprise network StoutSecure. This network is only available in Residence Halls in order to support devices such as Smart TVs, gaming consoles and portable gaming devices, Blu-ray Players, etc.
StoutNonSecure requires you to manually type the wireless network name.
To connect to the StoutNonSecure wireless network:
- Obtain the MAC address of the device (see the manufacturer's web site to learn how to obtain the MAC). Sometimes it is listed on the box the device came in, or listed within the wireless network settings menu of the device.
- From a web browser on a computer, register the MAC address of the device via the campus' NetReg system (https://net.uwstout.edu/)
- Proceed through the wireless network setup menu on the device, manually entering the network name (SSID) StoutNonSecure. Be careful of the uppercase and lowercase letters. There is no password required for the StoutNonSecure network.
- A restart of the device may be required.
Please note:
- Devices known to not connect to StoutNonSecure (or other enterprise wireless networks): Wii U, some Kindles and 3DS models
- Devices connected to StoutNonSecure do not have access to campus resources such as email, Canvas, or Access Stout.
- Do not purchase and setup wireless routers within the residence halls. They are not allowed. The StoutNonSecure wireless network is setup to be the solution to StoutSecure not working with WiFi device security settings.
