Connect Gaming Device, SmartTV, Media Player to the Wireless Network

Instructions to connect a WiFi device to StoutNonSecure (primarily in the Residence Halls)

Before you Begin

StoutNonSecure is a wireless network for devices not compatible with the eduroam secure wireless network. This network is only available in Residence Halls in order to support devices such as Smart TVs, gaming consoles and portable gaming devices, Blu-ray Players, etc.

Steps Required

  1. Obtain the MAC Address of your device

    Finding Your MAC Address on Windows

    To find the MAC address on a Windows device, follow these simple steps:

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
    3. In the Command Prompt, type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
    4. Scroll through the results until you find the network adapter you're using (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
    5. The MAC address will be listed next to "Physical Address" and will look something like 00-1A-2B-3C-4D-5E.

    Finding Your MAC Address on Apple Products

    On a Mac computer (MacOS):

    1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen and select "System Preferences."
    2. Click on "Network" and choose the network connection you want to check on the left side (WiFi, Wired, etc.).
    3. Click on "Advanced" and go to the "Hardware" tab.
    4. The MAC address will be listed as the "MAC Address" at the top of the window.

    On an iPhone or iPad:

    1. Open the "Settings" app.
    2. Tap on "General" and then "About."
    3. Scroll down to find "Wi-Fi Address," which is the MAC address of your device.

    Finding Your MAC Address on Android Devices

    To locate the MAC address on an Android smartphone or tablet, you can use the following steps:

    1. Open the "Settings" app on your Android device.
    2. Scroll down and select "About Phone" or "About Device" (the exact wording can vary depending on the device).
    3. Tap on "Status" or "Hardware Information." Look for "Wi-Fi MAC address" or simply "MAC address."
    4. This will display the MAC address of your Wi-Fi network interface.

    Keep in mind that the path to find the MAC address might slightly differ based on the manufacturer's custom Android skin or the version of Android you are using. If you're having trouble, you can also try searching within the settings by typing "MAC" into the search bar at the top of the Settings menu.

     
  2. NetReg your device

    Devices connecting to the campus' wired network (via Ethernet) are required to be registered annually. The prior-year's registrations are typically deleted in mid-August.

    To register a new device or re-register an existing device, open the computer’s web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer). A UW-Stout Network Registration page should automatically appear. If you receive a “Page cannot be displayed” error, type net.uwstout.edu into your browser’s address bar.

    To register a device

    1. On the device, read and agree to the Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy 
    2. Enter your campus username and password and click Log In
    3. Click the Register button (the device's MAC address is displayed) 
    4. Restart your computer

    To register a different device

    1. On a computer with a web browser, read and agree to the Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy 
    2. Enter your campus username and password and click Log In
    3. In the left navigation, click Register a Device.
    4. Enter the MAC Address of the device (see the manufacturer's instructions for finding a device's unique MAC address)
    5. Enter a Device Description (optional)
    6. Click Submit
    7. Restart the device

  3. Proceed through the wireless network setup menu on the device, StoutNonSecure should be visible in the available WiFi networks in the settings of whatever device you're trying to connect.
  4. A restart of the device is required in order for your device to be added to the network.

Please note

  1. Consumer-grade routers, such as from brands like TP-Link, ASUS, Netgear, etc. are not permitted.
  2. Devices known to not connect to eduroam (or other enterprise wireless networks): Wii U, some Kindles and 3DS models.
  3. Devices connected to StoutNonSecure can only reach the internet, and will not be able to connect to internal campus resources.
