Residence Life - Install Printers on Mac Laptops

This document shows how to install the residence hall printers on Macbooks. It includes both the normal install instructions and an alternative method for when documents print extremely slow.

Warning: Every residence hall has a public printer for all residents to use, provided by University Housing, called "HP Color LaserJet M651." These instructions are only for setting up these public printers, not for setting up housing staff printers in the shared offices.

Normal Installation of Residence Hall Printers (Using USB Cable)

1) Ensure laptop is powered on and you are signed in to the laptop

2) Plug in the USB cord from the printer into your laptop
a) Use the USB 3.0 to USB C adapter if your laptop only has Thunderbolt ports

3) Open the "Printers & Scanners" menu (if you don't know how, follow steps a & b below)
a) From the Desktop, press "CMD + Spacebar" to bring up the search bar
b) Type "Printers & Scanners," then press "Enter"

4) In the Printers & Scanners menu, "HP Color LaserJet M651" should show up in the Printers list automatically*
*If the printer does not automatically show up, complete steps 5 through 7, then move on to step 8

5) Click the Plus/Addition button

6) Select the "Default" button at the top, then select the printer with Name: "HP Color LaserJet M651" and Kind: "USB Multifunction" from the list

7) Click "Add" button

8) To test if the printer has installed correctly, try to print a document from your computer, and make sure to select the name of the printer you just installed: "HP Color LaserJet M651"

If Normal Installation is Slow:

If the normal installation steps above work but the printer takes an extremely long time to print (i.e. if the Print Queue dialog box (see below for example) on your laptop says "Ready to Print" or "Printing" for a long time but the printer does not do anything for over 5 minutes), then see below for alternate installation instructions. Follow the steps under "Installation - To Solve Issue of Slow Printing from Macs."

Installation - To Solve Issue of Slow Printing from Macs

1) Ensure laptop is powered on and you are signed in to the laptop

2) Open the "Printers & Scanners" menu (if you don't know how, follow steps a & b below)
a) From the Desktop, press "CMD + Spacebar" to bring up the search bar
b) Type "Printers & Scanners," then press "Enter"

3) Click the Plus/Addition button

4) Select the "IP" button at the top

The screen now shows the fields "Address," "Protocol," "Queue," and others.

5) On the printer display screen, click the small "Network" button

6) Look for "IPv4" Address:" and find the number listed to the right of it. This is called the IP Address for the printer

7) Back on your laptop, in the "Address" box, type the IP Address exactly. The "Name" field below will auto-populate with the same number

8) Click the drop down menu for "Protocol," and select "Line Printer Daemon - LPD." This setting makes printing faster! The option called "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP" is the setting that makes printing images and design files slow.

9) Click the "Add" button at the bottom of the window.
The Printer will now be listed in the Printers & Scanners window by its IP Address that you entered.

10) To test if the printer has installed correctly, try to print a document from your computer, and make sure to select the name of the printer you just installed.
