How to correctly connect network cables and computer to VoIP phone

An active network station is need for a VoIP.  The VoIP phones have the capabilities connect a computer to network in the office. Offices are setup with one active network station so there is no need for additional network stations when using VoIP.

Connecting phone to network

  1. On the bottom of the phone there are three place to plug a cable
  2. Put the network cable from the wall into the cable with the network icon
  3. Phone should go through a connection process that connects it to the network and you should now be able to here a dial tone  - See troubleshooting section VOIP phone does not connect

Connect Computer network to phone from phone

  1. On the bottom of the phone plug in a network cable to the middle port (There is a computer icon)
  2. Plug the other end of the cable into computer or docking station
  3. A computer icon should replace wireless icon in task tray  - See troubleshooting section VOIP phone does not computer does not connect to network


Troubleshooting

  1. Phone not connecting to network or giving error message on display that it can't connect
     Answer: Plug the network cable into another station and if that does not work contact help desk. 
  2. I have dial tone on phone but computer does not connect to network
    Answer:  Make sure network cable is connected tightly or open a browser and go to https://net.uwstout.edu/welcome.asp and register your computer on the network if you haven't
    Try another cable if the above does not work
    If that does not work call or put in a self-service ticket at the help desk
  3. No network or dial tone on phone
    Answer:  Make sure cables are tight and pull power on phone for 5 seconds and plug back in
    Try new cables if the above does not work
    If that does not work call or put in a self-service ticket at the help desk

Note:  Phone cannot just be plugged into any station.  They must be configured for phones. If you are unsure or want to move VoIP phone contact help desk.
