Canvas Instance Overview

A description of the Canvas account and sub account hierarchy.

There are three different sub-accounts in Canvas, each with unique functions and capabilities. The instructional sub-account has three separate areas Student Information System (SIS), sandbox, and supplemental.

Instructional:

The Instructional sub account has three separate areas roster, master, and supplemental. Instructional courses must adhere to the UW-System Canvas template requirements.

Student Information System (SIS)- The SIS courses are created by Access Stout. Students cannot be manually enrolled into SIS courses, but other roles can manually enrolled by Learning Technology Services. Additional role descriptions can be found at the following KB Article: Canvas - Course Level Roles Description
Sandbox - Sandbox courses can be used to create content before the roster courses become available. The Student role cannot be enrolled into sandbox courses. Instructors can create as many sandbox course shells as needed. Instructions to create sandbox course shells can be found here: Canvas: Creating a Sandbox Course
Supplemental - The supplemental courses can be used to support an academic program that are not term based. Students can be enrolled in supplemental courses and a self enrollment option is available. Supplemental courses must be created by Learning Technology Services.

Continuing Education: The continuing education instance allows the enrollment of individuals without UW-Stout login credentials. Examples of continuing education courses include youth summer camps, continuing education offered by the UW-Stout Discovery Center, and off-site First-Year Registration and Orientation. Continuing education courses do not require the use of the UW-System Canvas Template. Enrollment in continuing education courses can be done using Canvas Catalog or using a self-enrollment link. Students can also be manually enrolled by the Teacher role. To request a continuing education course email learn@uwstout.edu.

Training and Development: The training and development courses allow for self-enrollment and will be used primarily for professional development and Human Resources training. Examples of training and development courses include new employee compliance training, annual data security & privacy training, and NTLC ETCetera. Training and development courses do not require the use of the UW-System Canvas Template. To request a training and development course email learn@uwstout.edu.
