Apple: Initial Setup of a Student Apple Laptop
Instructions for setting up a Student Apple MacBook Pro, valid for models deployed starting May 2023.
IMPORTANT: The computer may pause for a bit between some steps of the Startup Assistant, please be patient.
Initial Setup
- Power on the MacBook Pro.
- Follow the Startup Assistant to customize and configure your settings. If you make a mistake or change your mind, many of the settings can be changed later in System Preferences.
- On the "Select Your Wi-Fi Network" screen, choose eduroam. Using username@uwstout.edu as an example, enter your Stout email address without the word "my" and your Stout password. Click Continue.
- If prompted to verify the wireless certificate, click Continue.
- After several more screens, the Mac will display your desktop.
- Several windows will pop up. If asked to verify the wireless certificate again, click Continue.
- Enter your computer password when prompted and click OK.
- A message from Microsoft AutoUpdate will also appear, click OK.
Setting up VPN
- Double-click on the UW-Stout VPN - Fall 2023 icon located in the upper right corner of your desktop.
- In the window that pops up click Continue followed by Install.
- Another window will appear, enter your computer password and click Install Software.
- You will be asked permission to access your Desktop, click OK.
- A message will pop up asking you to review the VPN Profile in System Preferences, along with the Profiles Window. Double-click the “UW-Stout VPN” Profile to review.
- Click Install in the lower lefthand corner. It will ask you if you're sure, select Continue.
- Click "Install". Enter your computer password when prompted.
- You can now move the VPN installer to the trash.
To Make VPN Easier to Access:
- Open System Settings, click on Control Center.
- Scroll down in the right pane until you see “VPN.” and change the setting to “Show in Menu Bar.”
- Restart the MacBook
