Problems Projecting: Simple Tips for Classrooms

Tips for projector issues in a classroom

If the projector is on, the HDMI cable connected, but nothing is displaying...

For Windows devices

  • Confirm that your display options are correct:

    • Access the Multiple Monitor Usage online document provided by the Windows Support Team.
      • Navigate to Windows 11 → Choose a display option and follow the instructions according to you preference.
        • This is the most common solution to a blank projection screen.
      • Alternately, navigate to Windows 11 → Multiple display options and follow the instructions to verify that your computer is using multiple displays.
    • Verify that your laptop is properly connected to the HDMI input cable.
  • If the problem remains:

    • If in PowerPoint, begin the SlideShow presentation. Even if it isn't displaying from PowerPoint, it may project when a slideshow is started.
    • Reboot with the HDMI cable plugged in
    • If using a display adapter, plug the adapter into the HDMI cable before plugging the adapter into the computer

If none of these solve the problem, reboot your laptop, ensuring that all updates have been installed.

For MacOS devices

  • Presenting using a Mac

    • Access the External Displays on Mac online document provided by the Mac User Guide.
      • Check the steps to ensure that you have followed the external display procedure.
      • Scroll to the bottom of the page with the header "If the external display isn't working" and follow the steps listed.
    • Attempt to reconnect to the HDMI adapter
      • Remove the HDMI adapter from connections to your Computer and the HDMI cable
      • Retry the connection by plugging the adapter into the HDMI cable before plugging the adapter into the computer

If none of these solve the problem, reboot your laptop, ensuring that all updates have been installed.
