LIT will be transitioning from optional Operating System (OS) updates to mandatory updates for all faculty and staff Mac computers. Software updates play a vital role in ensuring that our systems are protected against threats, while also providing performance enhancements and new features. By moving to mandatory OS updates, we help maintain a robust, stable, and secure computing environment for all our users.
IMPORTANT
On July 14th, LIT will be pushing a required update to all Macs on a version prior to macOS 12.3. We recommend that you update the OS before July 14th, so that you can run the update at a time that is convenient for you. The update can take approximately 20-45 minutes and you should not turn off your machine during the update. In addition, if you would prefer to bring your laptop into the Technology Help Desk, they can assist you with this.
If this device is no longer needed, please begin the process to send the device to surplus. You can find information on our KnowledgeBase: Asset Management (Surplus): Sending IT Hardware to surplus
Moving Forward
Beginning on July 15th, LIT will notify all Mac users via a prompt when a stable update is available. Users will be able to update at that time or defer the update for a limited time. After two deferrals, the update will automatically install the most recent version of macOS that the hardware supports.
If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact the Technology Help Desk or your IT Consultant.
