How to obtain headers from an email message

Email headers can aid in diagnosing spam and phishing messages as well as troubleshooting email delivery.

  1. Follow the appropriate instructions below to first display the message headers.
    • Outlook for Windows: Double-click the message to open it in a new window. Select the File tab and then click Properties. The information needed is next to Internet headers
    • Outlook for Mac OS X: Right-click or control+click the message, and then select View Source.
    • Outlook Web App (OWA): Choose View message details from the drop-down menu next to Reply/Reply all.
  2. Copy the entire header section and paste the information displayed into an email message and send to the Technology HelpDesk technician that is assisting you. A partial sample of what a email header looks like is below.
