Activate new account (Faculty and Staff)

This document explains the process to activate your Stout account.

All faculty, and staff are required to activate their UW-Stout account in order to establish the credentials (username and password) that will be used to access resources such as email, Access Stout, and Canvas. Once notified that your account is ready for activation follow these steps:


Account Activation

  1. Visit https://password.uwstout.edu and click Activate Your Account

  2. Enter your 7-digit Campus ID number and date of birth.  Click Next.

  3. Read the terms and conditions. Click I agree.

  4. Select and answer three security questions.
    These will be used in the event you forget your password so make sure they are answers you will remember.

  5. (Optional) Provide an alternate email address.
    This is used in the event you have forgotten your security questions.

  6. Create a strong, memorable password. Please keep in mind the password requirements.
    Enter the password twice and select Set Password.

You will receive a confirmation that your account has been activated.  The message will provide you with your campus username and email address.

 Multi Factor Authentication at UW-Stout

UW-Stout is currently moving from DUO to Microsoft Authenticator for Multi Factor Authentication (2-Step). During this transition, users may need to use both methods, depending on the application. All applications will use Microsoft Authenticator at the end of October, 2024.

UW-Stout is moving from DUO to Microsoft Authenticator for Multi Factor Authentication. The first application that has been moved over is Microsoft 365. All users will use MS Authenticator when they are prompted to authenticate to all Microsoft 365 web based products including Outlook, Teams, Word, Etc. Users will continue to use DUO for all other applications at this time.

There are two options to enroll:

  • Manually: If MS Authenticator has not been turned on for your account follow the steps in the Setting up Microsoft Authenticator Manually section.

  • Prompt: If MS Authenticator has been turned on for your account, you will see an invitation from Microsoft to set up your account. Follow the steps in the Enrolling with a Prompt from Microsoft section.

Some Known Issues with Enrolling

If you run into any of the following issues, please contact the Technology Help Desk at 715-232-5000 or techdesk@uwstout.edu and they can reset your account.

  • It appears that you are already enrolled with your Stout account, and it will not let you enroll again.
  • You get a prompt on your computer to add the 2-digit code to the Authenticator App on your phone, but the App does not prompt you to enter the code.

Setting up Microsoft Authenticator Manually

  1. On your desktop, visit https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo. Select Add Method

  2. Choose Authenticator app.

  3. Follow the prompts on the following screens. Once the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your mobile, click Next.

    1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator App if you haven't done this yet.

      Visit the Apple app store or Google play store on your mobile device and install the Microsoft Authenticator app. Alternatively, visit aka.ms/authapp to find QR Codes that will send you to the store for your Apple or Android mobile device. 

      You may also search in the Google Play store or Apple App store for "Microsoft Authenticator"  to manually download.
      *(If manually downloading, please be aware of of the app that you are downloading.  It should be fully named "Microsoft Authenticator"


  4. Set up your account on the Authenticator App. Click on Next

  5.  A QR Code will appear in the next step. You will come back to this and scan with your device.

      1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device and select Add work or school account. 
        • iPhone users press the PLUS button at the top right corner first to add an account, then select work or school account.

      2. Choose Scan a QR code.

      3. Back on your computer, scan the QR code with Microsoft Authenticator to enable your account. Once the scan is successful, click Next.

        Can't Scan?

        If you are unable to Scan the QR code, select the Can't Scan image? option which will provide you with a code to copy and a URL to visit to activate.  

        If you can't scan because it says that your account has already been activated and there is a UW-Stout account on your mobile app, please click Next to continue as normal.

      4. Let's try it out! Microsoft Authenticator will prompt you on your computer screen with a number to enter in your mobile app. Your mobile app will detect that a sign in is being requested.

      5. Enter the number shown in your Microsoft Authenticator App on your mobile device and then click Yes on your mobile device to approve.

      Enrolling with a Prompt from Microsoft 

      When you sign into any Microsoft 365 web based application, you will be prompted for More information required to begin the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment. Click Next.

      Enrolling in DUO for Multi Factor Authentication (2-Step)

      1. Go to password.uwstout.edu
      2. Enter your username. Click Next.

      3. Enter your current password. Click Next.

      4. Select Configure 2-Step Authentication

        Select 2-Step Authentication
      5. Select Start Setup.

      6. Select either Mobile Phone or Tablet depending on device you are using.

      7. Enter the telephone number of the device you are going to use. (You will skip this step if you are using a tablet)

      8. Select the OS that you are using.

      9. Install the Duo app on your device from your device OS application store.

      10. Open the Duo app.

      11. Tap the Set up account option on the app.

      12. Tap the Use a QR code option on the app.

      13. Using your phone, scan the QR Code that appears on the Duo setup page on your computer. Do NOT scan the QR Code below. This is only an example QR code.

      14. A green check mark will show on the QR Code once this is successfully completed.

      15. Select Continue

      16. Dismiss the message showing enrollment successful. 

      17. Select an authentication method from the login drop down menu.
        NOTE: You can select any of the methods, but it is recommended that you select Automatically send this device a Duo Push

      19. You are now set up with 2-Step Authentication and may close the page.
