Activate new account (Applicants)

Welcome to UW-Stout! We are excited for you to begin your journey with us. This guide will help you activate your UW-Stout Microsoft account and gain access to all essential campus technologies.

All new students are required to activate their UW-Stout account in order to establish the credentials (username and password) that will be used to access resources such as email, Access Stout, and Canvas.

Activate new account (Faculty and Staff)

Once notified that your account is ready for activation:

Step 1. Visit the Microsoft Password Account Page

Go to the Microsoft account page at https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/

  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection and are using a secure device.

A Microsoft account recovery page titled 'Get back into your account.' The page prompts the user with the question 'Who are you?' and instructs them to recover their account by entering their email or username in a text field. Below the text field, there is an example format for the email, such as 'user@contoso.onmicrosoft.com.' A CAPTCHA challenge is displayed, showing distorted characters 'LJJP6' that the user must type into a provided text box. An option to play an audio CAPTCHA is also available, indicated by a speaker icon, and a refresh icon to generate a new CAPTCHA. At the bottom, there are two buttons: 'Next' to proceed and 'Cancel' to exit the process.

Step 2. Enter Your UW-Stout Email Address

On the password reset page, enter your UW-Stout email address (formatted as username@my.uwstout.edu), complete the captcha, and select Next

  • Your UW-Stout email address was sent via email to the account you submitted your application with and, for new students, was also mailed to your home in an account activation letter.
  • Make sure to double-check for any typos in your email address.
  • Complete the captcha to verify you are not a robot, then click Next.

Step 3: Receive the Verification Code via Your Application Email

Select Email. The verification code will be sent to the email address you used when applying to the university.

  • The email will come from Microsoft on behalf of University of Wisconsin-Stout (msonlineserviceteam@microsoftonline.com)
  • Ensure you have access to this email account.
  • If you no longer have access to the email account, please call the Technology Help Desk for assistance.

The image shows a Microsoft account recovery screen with the option "Email my alternate email" selected. It instructs users that a verification code will be sent to an alternate email address (e.g., al*******@gmail.com). There is a blue "Email" button to proceed and a "Cancel" link at the bottom.

Step 4. Enter the Verification Code

After receiving the verification code via Email, enter the code on the provided screen.

  • Ensure the code is entered exactly as it appears in the email.
  • Click Next to proceed to the password creation screen.

Step 5. Create a New Password

You will now be prompted to create a new password for your UW-Stout account.

  • Enter your chosen password in the 'New password' field, and then re-enter it in the 'Confirm password' field to ensure they match.
  • Click Finish to complete the password reset process.

A Microsoft account recovery page titled 'Get back into your account,' displaying 'verification step 1 > choose a new password.' The page provides two input fields: one labeled 'Enter new password' and another labeled 'Confirm new password,' both marked with a red asterisk to indicate they are required fields. Below the input fields, there is a blue 'Finish' button to submit the new password, and a 'Cancel' link to exit the process.

Step 6. Confirmation and First Login

After successfully resetting your password, you will see a confirmation screen stating that your password has been updated.

  • You can now log in to all UW-Stout applications using your new credentials.
